A stag’s head in profile in solid tan, antlers up, with green pines either side and a small bird above, then “I’d rather be hunting” in heavy tan block capitals. Two colours. Straightforward, and the kind of design that sells the same in every county from the Shenandoah to the Piedmont.
Two inks. Dark ink — the tan-and-green version — for white, sand, heather and light olive. Light ink brightens the tan for black, charcoal and dark green. Both work; dark-on-heather is the one most shops stock.
10 to 12 inches on a front or back. The antlers are the finest detail and they’re fine at 10. A 4-inch chest version works if you don’t mind losing the bird.
Deer season in Virginia and the Carolinas runs October into January. Hunting-club and outfitter orders start in September. Have it pressed by then.
